Ton Infants' School

Happy Faces, Kind Hearts, Enquiring Minds

Welcome

The Rhondda Leaders

At Ton Pentre Infant School, pupils are provided with opportunities to influence the curriculum, take part in decision making processes and contribute to community work and the day to day life of the school.  We have three ‘Rhondda Leader ‘committees: The Happy Faces, Healthy Bodies Bunch, The Kind Hearts Crew and The Enquiring Minds Massive.

The committee names echo our school vision of ‘Happy Faces, Kind Hearts, Enquiring Minds.  All pupils in Dosbarth Ffynnu and Dosbarth Blodeuo are given the opportunity to be on a committee they have interest in.  On entering Dosbarth Blodeuo, new members are guided and supported by existing members in Dosbarth Ffynnu.  Each committee is run by two members of staff who have skills or interests in these areas of school life.  Meetings are held each half term with a specific agenda from key aspects of the School Development Plan.

Pupils on the Rhondda leader committees have the opportunity to report to governors on aspects of their work each term.  This is done face to face during our governors meetings and pupils and governors alike find this a rewarding process.

The school places a strong emphasis on community involvement offering many pupils opportunities to contribute to local initiatives.  Pupils participate in projects such as litter picking, local charity drives and environmental conservation efforts. Pupils work alongside staff and community members to make a tangible impact. Examples of such initiatives this past year include working with our local council and businesses to create Litter signs around the Rhondda, working with the Valley Veterans, sharing experiences, skills and knowledge on a number of topics and working with the Women’s Institute on history based projects.

A number of pupils At Ton Pentre Infants form the Criw Cymraeg, delivering weekly assemblies. They are given the opportunity to select Welsh speakers of the week and give certificates, including staff welsh speakers of the week.

Every week, pupils from our Happy Faces, Healthy Bodies bunch help deliver an Attendance assembly, giving the attendance percentages for each class and make decisions on the rewards given to the best attenders.

In our After School Club provision, all pupils who attend are asked what activities they would like to undertake.  The pupils’ views are then taken into account by the staff who try to accommodate the ideas of the learners when organising the extra-curricular activities.

All pupils from Reception to Year 2 took part in creating characters to reflect the four purposes on the new curriculum for Wales. This project was done in conjunction with our junior school who also gave their pupils this task.

Our Rhondda Leaders rock!!
