Transition into Ton Pentre Infants School:
The school works very closely with our two feeder Playgroups, Ton Tots and Ton Tiddlywinks to ensure that the children's start with us runs as smoothly as possible. Prior to your child starting school, an information sharing meeting takes place with the feeder settings, to discuss each child, their development and any important such as Additional Learning Needs and Health needs. Children who attend either of these settings will have opportunities to visit the Nursery class within the last few weeks of the Summer Term.
The school runs a "Play Days" event, which allows families to spend time alongside their children within the classroom environment. Play experiences are set up within the Nursery classroom and an explanation of what the children are gaining from that particular activity is on display. This gives families an insight into life at Ton Pentre Infants School and allows families to develop an understanding of how play activities have an educational purpose. This is also an opportunity for children to meet the staff and for families to ask any questions. Additional visits to the school can be made if necessary.
The school's Family Engagement Officer will also contact the children's families prior to them starting school to organise a home/school visit, in which we gather any relevant information from home and share important information about school.
Transition to Ton Pentre Junior School:
The school works closely with the Junior School to allow a smooth transition for the children between both schools. The Junior staff along with some of their current Year 3 pupils, visit the Year 2 children in the Summer Term for a question-and-answer session.
On the Cluster Transition day, the children have an opportunity to visit the Junior School for the day. The children benefit greatly from this as it gives them the opportunity to meet the staff and children and to spend some time in their new classroom. On this day, children are introduced to their “Buddies,” who will support them in their transitional year. Additional visits are arranged for any children who need them.
The Junior and Infant staff meet in the Summer Term to discuss the children's progress, the Additional Learning Needs Co-ordinators from both schools meet to discuss the children with additional needs and the Family Engagement Officers from both schools meet to discuss families requiring ongoing support.
Activities will take place within the classroom in the lead up to the transition, in which the children have opportunities to create a fact file about themselves to share with their new teacher, find out the answers to any questions they may have and address any worries they may feel.
Finally, on the first day back to school in September, all Year 3 children return to the Infants School to say goodbye and then all children and their families are walked through Ton Pentre towards the Junior School waving to the local community on their way. Many residents and shop keepers come out to wave and clap the children on their journey. On arrival at the Junior School the Junior children and staff are in the yard and cheer and clap the new arrivals into the school. It truly is a wonderful event!
Year on year transition:
On the Cluster Transition Day, all year groups have the opportunity to spend the day in their new classrooms and meet their new classroom staff. Everyone moves up! It’s a lovely day which benefits all children. Class teacher's meet in the Summer Term to ‘hand over’ the class and share relevant, important information.
Cluster Transition:
The Treorchy Cluster of Schools has a clear Transition Plan in place, which all Primary schools have written together with the Secondary School. This ensures consistent experiences throughout the Cluster for all children eventually entering Treorchy Comprehensive School.
